Bill, Tom, and I (Mary Martin Sutter) were known in the neighborhood as the “Babes” until the boys hit elementary school. We went everywhere together from the backyard tree house to long treks to the river. I loved my brothers when I wasn’t fighting with them, and it always bothered me (not enough to do refuse the kindnesses) that when we’d go to the Igloo for an ice cream cone, the boys would get a small cone and I’d get a big one all for the same price – and I was the youngest! Aside from the fact that I must have been the neighborhood favorite (actually the neighbors felt sorry for me being the only girl) I wanted them to get a big ice cream too.
